World Cup Rugby Exits
Some of you readers may know the Gotelee CEO to be a proud Scot and one who grew up in a rugby world. ‘Well’, I hear you exclaim, ‘you must be furious at the actions of a southern hemisphere ref resulting in the disappointing exit of your beloved Jocks’. And the response at approximately 5.50pm last Saturday was unprintable in a family context like the Gotelee web site. However….
As the sad and frustrating truth began to dawn that the Scots were guilty of the same error of judgement as the much vaunted English, the refereeing decision became less relevant. Both teams badly misjudged the final play of their exit games, one by messing up their line out throw in and the other by electing to go for a line out instead of going for goal.
So what is the parable? Get the basics right, I suppose, and reduce the risks of mistakes. Have a clear game plan, good team leader and a reliable executor who can deliver what is needed when it is needed. A bit like Gotelee in the law.
